[2020 Consideration] Decent Dating-Apps in Japan!

To be honest with you, my candid opinion about THE BEST Dating-App in Japan is…

You know,
there are two types of fake/fraud in the dating app (and dating site).

One, the app/site itself is decent,
but, tons of scammers or fake accounts are mixing in there.

Another one, in the first place the app/site itself is kinda scam or fake.

CHECK !!

I personally experienced both and many.

And I've researched a lot about better apps/sites when I chose it for my dating life in real.

And I noticed something.
There are so many websites that introduce so many apps/sites, however, the purpose of most of the introduction websites or review sites is only to earning affiliate reward. Thus, they just write recommendation articles and publish the ranking based on the ranking they can earn a high reward.

Of course, as a result of that,
a lot of people sign up the high ranked apps and then many more people gather in the high ranked apps actually, so, it leads to many matching. That makes sense in a sense, though…
However, in my experiences, many of the apps are not decent or not workfor finding a decent connection even though many introduction websites recommend them.

And you know, some of them I've never used or even I've never heard, it means most real Japanese women don't use them too.
Make sense, right?

So, I don't think it's useful that I learn and write about a lot of apps/sites most of us commonly don't use. Agree?

After so much research for my own dating life,
I chose some apps/sites and used them real.
And then, I've done a lot of experiences of both good and bad.
I've actually tried/used Tinder, OkCupid, Match.com, Pairs,
Coffee Meets Bagel, Bumble, and some more!
And my friends tried/used with, Omiai, ゼクシィ縁結び(zexy-enmusubi).
These apps I listed now are at least not a fraud app itself.
So, let me explain them a little more.

Characteristics of each app

Tinder ☆

Maybe I don't need to explain about tinder.
Yes, everybody knows tinder is a kinda hookup app but not for seeking relationships generally. In Japan as well.
The good point is the number of users is huge in Japan too. And even if you cannot use the Japanese language, there is almost any inconvenience.
If you are seeking just something light, casual stuff, good enough.
But, some girls who are looking for something serious are also there because they are not aware of being the wrong place. So, please avoid trouble, write clearly on your profile that you are seeking just casual flirting. Avoid drama.

Gaijin HunterThey mostly use tinder, so, a lot.
ScammerA lot. Because it's free and no verification system
MembershipBasically free
App languageBoth English and Japanese

OkCupid ☆☆

As I explained in my past article[How to overcome the Language Barriers in dating in Japan], in the dating market, there is a pretty high possibility that many Japanese women who can use English fluently are mere "Gaijin-Hunter" unfortunately.
Of course, I never say all of them are so, and there are some decent women who can use English well. What I want to say now is that we have to read and answer so many questions [only English] when you make the account of OkCupid.
It is a great thing because you can know a lot about what the person is like.
So, I like OkCupid personally.
On the other hand, the majority of Japanese women who are not good at English can't use OkCupid.

TypeCasual - Serious
For...Both short term dating and long term dating…
User in JapanNo data in Japan
Average age20s, 30s, 40s
Gaijin HunterThere are a lot.
ScammerLess than tinder because a bit too many processes to make
an account. If the profile Q&A is too less, possibly scam
Premium membership1 month≒¥2,200, 3 month≒¥1,600/month
App languageEnglish only

Match.com (match) ☆☆

If you are seeking not just romance but you seek more serious to marriage,
Match.com is one of your choices. Even in Japan.
You know Match.com is kinda pioneer of the online dating.
So, there are a huge number of users all over the world.
You can browse the women there, but if you want to take action you have to buy the membership. And women have to buy the membership as well.
So, it means, they are serious about seeking the life partner.
You can try just free browsing first, then if you like it you can buy the paid membership.
This is a serious marriage app, so, the strict verification is trustworthy.
Please note that there are different sites for your current country and for a specific country. You have to sign in from[Match.com International] because the App doesn't support the International version.

TypeSerious - Marriage
For...Serious relationship, marriage partner
User in Japan2.5M(estimated data)

ScammerRare, because it's not free for both men and women
Premium membership1 month≒¥2,200, 3 month≒¥4,800

Pairs ☆☆☆

If you feeling like "Match.com is a little too serious about marriage, but I seek somewhat serious", I think Pairs the good for you.
The average age is younger than Match.com.
Pairs is basically not for mere casual flirting. It's for making decent BF/GF, serious relationship. You have to use the Japanese language for this app, so, necessarily foreign people are the minority there. However, signing up for this with a dictionary or google translate would be worth it. Because Pairs has overwhelmingly the top amount of usersin Japan, it means highly likely you can meet someone special.
And the best thing that I like about Pairs is their communities.
There are so many communities like SNSsuch as "International relationship", "Foreign boyfriend", "Travel lovers"…
So, you can meet someone from common interests more naturally.
It makes sense that "Pairs" is the most popular app in Japan anyway.
Try and one message is free. If you spend your ¥3500 for just one Izakaya dinner,
I recommend you to spend it on this membership instead.
It would change your life to romantic.

TypeRomance, Relationship
For...Not for casual. Not for marriage yet. Want BF/GF.
User in Japan10M
Average age20s, 30s,
Gaijin HunterRare. Because they know the number of foreign guys is super low in Pairs.
ScammerSomewhat
Membership1 month≒¥3,590, 3 months≒¥7,050
App languageJapanese only

Coffee Meets Bagel ☆☆

This app is not famous compare to the other apps in the world, so, it's minor in Japan as well. Moreover, language is only English, so, it is difficult to get numerous Japanese users. I think it barely works in Tokyo, but it may don't work in other smaller cities because of no user.
I personally could meet and date some guys from "Coffe meets Bagel" as same like other apps.
The good point of this app is, not too aggressive.
We cannot send "LIKE" to a lot of people unless we buy the points. But, we receive a few matched profiles from the app every noon. The chat page with the matched person is open only for a week, you can exchange personal contact information if you want to keep in touch. The chat page will expire in a week automatically, so, it would be a clue to invite her to the next phase.

TypeCasual - Serious
For...Both short term dating and long term dating…
User in JapanNo data in Japan
Average age20s, 30s, 40s
Gaijin HunterSomewhat
ScammerSomewhat

Bumble ☆☆

Bumble is similar to Tinder, but, the initiative is on the women's side.
Only women can send the first message after the matching, so, maybe some guys feel a bit frustrating.
However, because of that, the women there are not too shy and somewhat confident. That's attractive, right?
This app is not so famous in Japan yet (in 2020), but, as it recently started supporting the Japanese language, the number of users is sharply increasing mainly in big cities like Tokyo.
If you matched with a woman, she has to send you the first message within 24h otherwise the matching will be expired.
And if you received the first message from a woman, you have to reply within 24h too. There are some options, but, the basic system is so.
Don't blunder away your matching!

with ☆☆

One of the most famous Japanese YouTubers "メンタリスト (Mentalist) DaiGo" who has 2.2M subscribers supervises this dating app "with".
It's not sure how truly affects the psychology to the dating app, but, at least, so many people are joining there. "メンタリスト (Mentalist) DaiGo" brand is a big reliability.
This app is also for not casual, but not too serious like marriage.
Just decent BF/GF searching.
So, it's similar to "Pairs", and there are a lot of communities for natural connection just like "Pairs". The membership fee is almost the same as "Pairs".
The differences are average age. 55% - 60% of "Pairs" users are the 20s, but,
70% of "with" users are the 20s. If you use the Japanese Language somehow, and you seek 20s girlfriend, worth it.

TypeKinda Serious

ScammerSomewhat

Omiai ☆☆

"Omiai" the name of this app means old Japanese marriage style
"interview for arranged marriage". It used to be managed by parents or grandparents for the young generation's marriage back in time.
Nowadays, the old habit became almost extinct, but, this app means the young generation themselves manage their "interview for marriage" on their own.
A new positive independent style of "お見合い (Omiai)".
The position of this app is like "similar to 'Pairs' but more focus on marriage",
so, the average age range is from the mid-20s to 30s.
Unfortunately, many scammer are mixed in there because this app is free for women. But if you seek a Japanese wife, this app is one of the choices.

TypeSerious - Marriage
For...Serious relationship, marriage partner
User in Japan5M
Average age20s, 30s
Gaijin HunterRare
ScammerThe guys who want to get married is a great target for scammer,
unfortunately. So, a lot.
Membership1 month≒¥3,980, 3 months≒¥9,960

ゼクシィ縁結び(Zexy-enmusubi) ☆☆☆

"Zexy" is a very popular Japanese bridal magazine.
"Let's go to the book store for buying 'Zexy'" some guys used this phrase as the marriage proposal… or some guys gifted Zexy to her before the engagement ring…
is it true or not, though.
Anyway, Zexy is the symbol of the dream marriage for the young generation in Japan. And this app is it!
Because it's the high quality of marriage service, the membership fee is a little expensive than others, but, women also pay exactly the same fee.
And only this app requires to submit income clarification and Diploma.
Yes, completely serious about high-quality matching!
So, of course, there is no "Gaijin-Hunter" or scammer basically.
The average age range is a bit higher than "Omiai", like the late 20s and 30s and 40s.
One more unique point of Zexy is the men and women ratio.
While the other app's ratio is about 7:3, Zexy's ratio is 1:1.
If you seek Japanese wife seriously, it deserves a bit expensive membership fee and strict verification.

Dating Apps results, and summary

I’ve actually tried/used Tinder, OkCupid, Match.com, Pairs,
Coffee Meets Bagel, Bumble, and some more!
Actually, I had some dates from Tinder, OkCupid, Coffee Meets Bagel.
And in fact, I got boyfriends from Match.com, Pairs, Bumble.
(1 - 3 years serious relationships)
Also, some guys from Coffee Meets Bagel, Bumble, Pairs became good friends still hang out sometimes.

My friends tried/used with, Omiai, ゼクシィ縁結び(Zexy-enmusubi).
Some of them got boyfriends from with, and Pairs.
One engaged with her boyfriend from ゼクシィ縁結び(Zexy-enmusubi) .
And the other one got married to her man from Omiai.

I found some Dating-Apps/sites were useless or kinda fraud after I used them in fact.
I personally want to make their name public in order to prevent the next victims.
However...

Since I'm scared about being attacked by them,
I cannot directly write the name of them, sorry about that.
Just I only can say,
I didn't write about some Apps/sites here even if they show up on google top about "Dating, Japan", you know the reason why I didn't write about them, right?
I hope you trust my recommendations for Apps that I wrote it above.

A Matching website

Additionally, I have one more personal recommendation from my experience.
It's not App but only the website, furthermore the website looks kinda analog or a bit deserted, but, I think it really trustworthy.
It's a shame that not very active and no App.
This website is not only for dating but also for language-exchange or friends. An American guy who lives decades in Japan started an informative blog for helping International relationships by explaining the dating-culture gap or common misunderstanding or trouble around 10 years ago.

Yeah! Exactly! It's similar to what I'm doing!

And then, he created the original matching site for decent International romance in Japan.
Of course, I don't know him, but, I read a bunch of his writing and I convinced he's completely decent.
So, I cannot stop recommending it. It's all free.

Don't miss it!
